[ARCHIVED] City of Marina to Reveal All-Inclusive Playground Design

All-Inclusive Playground Flyer

MARINA, CA – After seven months of working to bring a community vision for all-inclusive playground to life, the City of Marina is excited to invite the community to attend the Playground Design Reveal Day on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Vince DiMaggio Park (3200 Del Monte Blvd.).

This celebration will unveil the final playground design and mark the countdown to our Community Volunteer Build, where residents, partners and organizations will come together to help build the 38,000 square-foot playground, one of California’s largest all-inclusive playgrounds. The design reveal event will offer family-friendly activities for attendees to enjoy, including face painters and sensory tents, food for purchase and a live DJ.

“The completion of this all-inclusive playground design marks a major milestone for our city and a proud moment for everyone who helped make it possible,” said Marina Mayor Bruce Carlos Delgado. “From the children who shared their dream designs to the partners who helped bring them to life, this project shows what’s possible when we work together for inclusion. We’re thrilled to celebrate the design reveal and look forward to seeing families from every corner of Marina enjoy this special space.”

An all-inclusive playground is a space intentionally designed so that children of all abilities, including those with physical, sensory, cognitive, or social challenges, can play side by side. Led by a Steering Committee and City staff, the development process for an all-inclusive playground in Marina began with local elementary school visits to Marina Vista, JC Crumpton and Ione Olson, where the team engaged students in brainstorming what their dream playground would look like. The children created imaginative and inspiring drawings that reflected their hopes for a space where everyone can play together.

During a design day event on April 14, those same children and families saw their ideas come to life through the playground concepts developed by Leathers & Associates from their artwork. Their creativity and enthusiasm authentically shaped the design, which celebrates inclusion, accessibility and community connection.

The final playground design includes features for children and adults with mobility limitations, sensory processing conditions, visual and auditory impairments and developmental and cognitive delays. The playground will utilize equipment with different levels of challenge, providing play opportunities for children of all abilities, which fosters cooperative, social and shoulder-to-shoulder play.

The all-inclusive playground team has since presented the proposed design to both the Recreation & Cultural Services Commission and the City Council, which have enthusiastically granted approval. Leading up to the unveiling event the week of November 3, Steering Committee members will revisit the elementary schools to invite students to partake in the Playground Design Reveal Day with their families.

Looking ahead to the construction phase in 2026, the City is actively seeking community volunteers to help build the playground on-site once the design is unveiled. Under the supervision of construction consultants, hundreds of volunteers will work side-by-side to build the playground from the ground up. The City encourages members of the community to get involved and sign up today as volunteer builders!
