Joby Aviation a pioneer in the development of electric Air Taxi’s is coming to Marina’s Municipal Airport
On December 17, 2019 the Marina City Council approved a ground lease with Joby Aviation that will allow them to build an initial 55,000 square foot structure at the Marina Municipal Airport for the development of its electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle. Joby is currently leasing space in existing hangar buildings on airport property where it is winning the race to deliver its future air taxi vehicles to the market. The company is already making a big impact on Marina with new jobs, improved airport facilities and new high tech interest in the community. Joby Aviation is, “building a new system for transportation to transform your daily life, at greater safety and, in time, at a similar cost to driving,” said Joby Aviation founder and CEO JoeBen Bevirt.

Joby Aviation recently raised $590 million in Series C Financing to move forward with launching their air taxi service. Toyota is the largest investor with other significant funders bringing Joby’s Series C funding to $590 million. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-01-15/toyota-invests-394-million-in-joby-aviation-s-flying-taxis.

"Air transportation has been a long-term goal for Toyota, and while we continue our work in the automobile business, this agreement sets our sights to the sky," said Toyota President and CEO Akio Toyoda. "As we take up the challenge of air transportation together with Joby, an innovator in the emerging eVTOL (all-electric vertical takeoff and landing) space, we tap the potential to revolutionize future transportation and life. Through this new and exciting endeavor, we hope to deliver freedom of movement and enjoyment to customers everywhere, on land, and now, in the sky."
In addition to the 55,000 square foot building currently under construction, Joby has submitted plans for an additional 500,000 square foot manufacturing facility for its aircraft. This project is currently being reviewed by the Marina Planning Division and will be scheduled for hearing in early spring. To learn more about this project, please click on the project page here.
