The Canine Unit is authorized to have two Officers for patrol, each assigned to an evening shift to provide seven day coverage per week. This canine officer is generally assigned to work an evening shift as these are the times the canine is needed most.
Canine Units specialize in tracking and locating suspects. A canine can search areas in a fraction of the time it would take a number of officers. They are a proven asset to officer safety that often deters suspects from fighting or fleeing. The Canine unit currently only has one officer assigned to the unit.
